Markdown to Word Converter

Turn Markdown or an AI answer into a Word .docx with real headings, lists, tables and links. Built in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

Document

How to use this tool

  1. Paste your Markdown into the box, for example an answer copied with the copy button under a ChatGPT or Claude reply. Or press "Try an example".
  2. Choose the page size, font and text size for the document.
  3. Press "Download .docx". The file is built on your device and saved like any other download.
  4. Open it in Word, Google Docs, Pages or LibreOffice. Headings, lists and tables are real Word elements you can restyle.

What each piece of Markdown becomes in Word

Every Markdown construct is turned into the Word element that means the same thing, using Word's own styles wherever one exists. The right-hand column was produced by converting the left-hand column with this tool and reading the resulting .docx back, paragraph by paragraph.

Why not paste the answer straight into Word?

AI chats write their answers in Markdown. Copy an answer as text and Word receives the raw symbols: pound signs in front of headings, asterisks around bold words and rows of pipes where a table should be. Copy the rendered answer from the chat window instead and Word imports the web page's look, with its fonts, colours and spacing, as direct formatting that fights your template and is tedious to clear.

Converting the Markdown gives you a clean document instead. Headings use Word's Heading styles, so the navigation pane, the automatic table of contents and the Design tab all work. Lists use Word's list numbering, so adding an item renumbers the rest. Tables are real tables with a header row that repeats when a table runs onto a second page.

Who it is for

Anyone who drafts in Markdown and delivers in Word: consultants turning an AI-assisted draft into a client report, students submitting work written in a notes app, developers sending a README to someone who lives in Office, and writers whose editor wants a .docx with tracked changes. The Markdown it reads is CommonMark with the GitHub extensions, the same flavour AI chats, GitHub and most editors use.

Private by design

The document is built entirely inside this page. Your Markdown is not uploaded, logged or stored, and nothing but the finished file is created, on your own device, when you press the download button.

Limits

  • Images are not embedded. Each image becomes its alt text in square brackets, because the page does not fetch pictures from other websites.
  • Equations written in LaTeX (between dollar signs) stay as plain text; they are not turned into Word equations.
  • HTML inside the Markdown is reduced to its text. Only line-break tags are kept, as line breaks.
  • Links to other pages of a website or to #sections keep their text but are not clickable, since they mean nothing inside a Word file. Web and email links stay clickable.
  • Code blocks are set in a monospace font on a grey background, without syntax colouring.

Frequently asked questions

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. The Word file is assembled by code inside this page, in your browser. Your text is never sent to a server, and the tool keeps working if you go offline after the page has loaded.

How do I get an AI answer into Word with its formatting?

Use the copy button under the answer in ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, which copies the answer's Markdown, paste it here and download the .docx. Pasting straight into Word tends to bring over the chat's colours and fonts, or plain text full of asterisks; this gives you a clean document in Word's own styles.

Will the headings show up in the navigation pane and a table of contents?

Yes. Markdown headings become Word's built-in Heading 1 to Heading 6 styles, which is what the navigation pane and Word's automatic table of contents look for.

Does it open in Google Docs, Pages and LibreOffice?

Yes. The download is a standard Office Open XML (.docx) file, which all of them open. Google Docs converts it when you open it from Drive.

Are images included?

No. A Markdown image is only a link to a picture somewhere else, and the page does not download pictures from other sites. Each image is written as its description in square brackets, so you can see where to insert the picture in Word.

Is it free?

Yes, with no sign-up and no limit on how many documents you make one at a time. Pro, planned as a one-time purchase, adds converting a whole folder of Markdown files at once.
